here were smiles all round when the Thai womens volleyball team flew into Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday from Hanoi following their first-ever victory at the Asian Championship. SOMCHAI POOMLARD
Reaching the finals of the Asian womans volleyball championships in Vietnam over the weekend was a huge and unexpected accomplishment for the Thai team.
Most people believed a place in the finals was as far as they could possibly go, since their opponent in the championship match was China, a world-class powerhouse.
Indeed, victory for China seemed certain when the Chinese women won the first set 25-20. Remarkably, however, that was the last set they would win, as the Thai women stormed back to upset the bronze medalist at last years Olympics.
The scores were 25-19, 25-19 and, in a nail-biting closing set, 25-23. It was Thailands first-ever victory over China.
After the match, Thai coach Kriatipong Ratchatakriangkai admitted that to defeat China, 11-time Asian champions, was way beyond expectations.
He said the next task is to prepare the team for the World Grand Champion Cup in Japan in November where, as the new continental champion, Thailand will represent Asia. The Thai women have also earned a berth at the World Grand Prix next year.
Yesterday, the newly-crowned Asian champions returned home where they were greeted by an army of journalists, well-wishers and students at Suvarnabhumi airport.
The squad will meet Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at Government House this morning.
Each player will get 200,000 baht from the National Sports Development Fund and Pongpayome Vasputi, president of the Volleyball Association of Thailand, promised yesterday that he will find another one million baht for the team.
Its a huge achievement, a world-class performance, said Pongpayome.
We are now a force to be reckoned with on the international stage. I will hold a reception party and find one million baht for the team.
